Smart PoE Lighting: LKAB’s Connected Workplace Transformation.
LKAB Minerals extended their team with Scenariio to transform its Derby head office into a modern, connected workplace that supports employee wellbeing, sustainability and long-term operational efficiency. At the core of the project was a smart PoE lighting system integrated with building data, connectivity and AV systems. This created a unified environment where lighting, occupancy and workplace performance can be monitored and optimised in real time.

Located within a longstanding building in Derby’s industrial cluster, LKAB’s head office required a full modernisation to better support its people and reflect its sustainability ambitions.

Smart PoE Lighting, AV integration and network infrastructure delivered as one system.
Scenariio delivered a fully integrated smart workplace solution, centred around PoE smart lighting and supported by upgraded connectivity and AV systems.
A smartengine lighting system was deployed across the site, consisting of 120 PoE-connected luminaires and a dense network of multisensors.
The system uses:
- Occupancy-based lighting control
- Daylight harvesting
- Automated dimming and switching
Lighting responds dynamically to how spaces are used. As employees enter a space, lighting activates automatically. When areas are unoccupied, lighting reduces to save energy.
By removing traditional drivers from fixtures and centralising them within the comms room, the system eliminates 240v power in ceiling voids. This improves safety, reduces maintenance requirements and extends the lifespan of lighting assets.

Technical overview of the project.
A smart PoE lighting system combined with a dense sensor network provides both energy-efficient illumination and real-time building data. For IT and facilities teams, this creates a single, connected platform to monitor occupancy, environmental conditions and energy use, enabling better control, improved comfort and more informed decision making. For this project 120 smart lighting fixtures and 184 sensors were integrated.
A comprehensive site survey and access point deployment ensured optimal wireless coverage and performance. The result is reliable, high-speed connectivity across the workplace, supporting day-to-day operations, mobile working and future digital services.
Four meeting spaces were designed with integrated AV technology to support seamless collaboration. Users can easily connect and share content, improving productivity and reducing friction in meetings.
A full infrastructure upgrade, including structured cabling to all workstations, provides a robust and future-ready foundation for the workplace. This ensures consistent performance, supports flexibility in desk layouts and enables the integration of new technologies without disruption.
The comms room was redesigned to support modern infrastructure, including centralised lighting control. This improves system organisation, accessibility and long-term maintainability.
Support during the transition ensured minimal disruption to operations. Workspaces were set up efficiently, allowing teams to return to productivity quickly.
On-site support during go-live ensured a smooth transition for staff. Any issues were resolved quickly, helping teams adapt to the new environment with confidence.
Upgraded climate control supports a comfortable and consistent working environment. This contributes to employee wellbeing and helps maintain optimal operating conditions for equipment.
